Place to Visit
In Sicily's Val di Noto
Vendicari Wildlife Oasis
Established in 1984 by the Sicilian Region, it offers three spectacular walking trails to discover local flora and fauna. The old tuna fishery (tonnara), the Svevian Tower, pristine beaches, and the crystal-clear sea where you can snorkel surrounded by fish, are unmissable experiences. During the migration months, in autumn and spring, from specially built hides you can admire flamingos and mute swans, which stop here on their migration to Africa. Throughout the year, you can observe grey herons, black-winged stilts, terns, and little egrets. It is also an important nesting site for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), confirming the site’s environmental value and protection
Hyblaean Necropolises
Since ancient times, the area south of Sicily has been inhabited by populations who utilised the limestone rock to create dwellings. In the Rosolini area and throughout the Hyblaean territory, you can admire evocative testimonies of that distant period. Among the many possibilities, we highlight Cava Lazzaro (also called Cava Grande di Rosolini); north of Rosolini, we suggest Cava Paradiso, Cava del Cugno, and Cava dei Servi; south of Rosolini, we point out Contrada Grotticelli, which represents the Syracusan part of the Ispica cava (gorge), where you can admire the ruins of the Chapel of Saint Alexandra, a Byzantine-era convent
Cava Sant’Anna & Cassibile Necropolis
Nearby, north of Avola, this is an unforgettable excursion that will lead you to Sicily’s second-largest necropolis (with over 2,000 tombs), to walk in the Cava Grande del Cassibile canyon with its natural pools, and to enjoy breathtaking views stretching from Capo Passero at the southernmost tip of Sicily, up to Mount Etna
Roman Villa of Tellaro
This is a Roman-era villa dating back to the late Roman Imperial period (second half of the fourth century), featuring splendid, perfectly preserved mosaics
